Lake Mead Cruise – See St. Thomas, the Ruins of Lake Mead

St. Thomas was everything you’d expect an old west town to be in the early 1900’s.

Mormons founded St. Thomas where the Muddy and Virgin Rivers came together. Its access to water gave it a start as a farming town. It had a railroad station, miners, farmers, and various shops that accommodated them.  Over 270 people lived there, according to the 1930 Census. Never did they suspect that in this land of drought and desert, a flood would destroy their town.

Yet that’s exactly what happened.

The Hoover Dam, one of the largest dams in the world at the time, created Lake Mead as its reservoir. Lake Mead was right next to St. Thomas. As the water rose, people began to leave.

The last resident left St. Thomas in 1938, when the water level of Lake Mead finally rose too high.

The water buried the down for 65 years, like a Mormon Atlantis. Recently, climate changes caused the water to recede, leaving the town center exposed.

If you come with us on a Lake Mead Cruise, you just might see the ruins of St. Thomas peeking out of the crusty ground.

The story of St. Thomas is a unique and powerful story of progress, and the things we leave behind to pursue it.

Let us show you Lake Mead on your next visit to Vegas.

The Hoover Dam: The Hoover Dam Gets New Bridge!

After 8 years of hard work and $240 million invested, The Hoover Dam Bridge has finally arrived! The bridge was a solution to a long time problem. Cars used to be routed across the Hoover dam to cross the border between Arizona, and Nevada. In addition to the routing, check points were added after the 9-11 attacks, which caused a lot of traffic jams. Now thanks to the new 4 lane bridge, that has stopped. There’s no more check points and travelers can pass by more quickly.
The Bridge’s Name is what?
The official name of the Bridge is called; The Mike O’Callaghan Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge. Whew, what a mouthful! But, I have a feeling people are going to start calling it “The Hoover Dam Bridge.” According to federal officials, it’s the 2nd largest bridge in the United States, and it’s the longest bridge built with concrete arches in the western hemisphere. It’s also beautiful to look at.
Will the Hoover Dam Still be a Tourist Attraction?
The Hoover dam is one of the most visited Las Vegas attractions, there’s no doubt that Hoover dam will still be open to tourists. The bridge is 890 feet above the Colorado River, nestled between the rocks of the Black Canyon, and has spectacular views of Hoover Dam and Lake Mead. The bridge will just add more excitement to the Hoover dam.
Whether you want to see the New Bridge, or explore the Hoover Dam, Annie Bananies has a tour just for you. Call 702-804-9755 or book now.
